Apply For The American Legion Legacy Scholarship

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is your pathway to a brighter future in education. If you are a child of a U.S. military member who lost their life while on active duty on or after September 11, 2001, or a child of a post-9/11 veteran with a combined disability rating of 50 percent or higher by the Department of Veterans Affairs, you may be eligible for this needs-based scholarship.

Who Can Apply?

  • Children of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.
  • Children of post-9/11 veterans who have been assigned a combined disability rating of 50 percent or greater by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

What Does the Scholarship Offer?

Each American Legion Legacy Scholarship addresses the financial gap that may remain after all federal and state educational grants and scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized. Here’s what the scholarship provides:

  • Up to $20,000 for children of the fallen.
  • Up to $5,000 for children of the disabled.
  • The opportunity to reapply for additional annual awards for up to six years.

Application Deadline

For Children of Fallen Post-9/11 Servicemembers:

  • Official (Form DD1300) military death certificate.
  • FAFSA Summary showing Expected Family Contribution.
  • Any award notifications from federal or state veteran benefits programs.
  • Financial Aid Package notification from your prospective/current institution of higher education.
  • A breakdown of all education-related expenses.

For Children of Post-9/11 Veterans VA-Rated 50% or Higher Disabled:

  • Official disability rating paperwork from the VA.
  • FAFSA Summary showing Expected Family Contribution.
  • Any award notifications from federal or state veteran benefits programs.
  • Financial Aid Package notification from your prospective/current institution of higher education.
  • A breakdown of all education-related expenses.

General Requirements for All Applicants:

  • High school senior or high school graduate currently accepted or attending an accredited institution of higher education within the United States.
  • DD214 showing dates of service and condition of discharge.
